Your data stays yours

The app

InspiredTax is offline-first. All tax data you enter — income, deductions, and other figures — is stored only on your device, encrypted with AES-GCM-256. Working out your return needs no connection, and we run no server: your tax data is never sent to us, sold, or shared with any third party. We simply never see your data.

Your profile also keeps a few identity details on the phone: your username (shown on the login screen so you can pick your profile), and — encrypted with your PIN — your name, date of birth, e-mail address and SARS tax reference if you enter them. None of them leaves the phone.

Google sign-in and the free trial (Android)

To start the free trial you sign in with Google and let the app use one hidden folder in your own Google Drive that only this app can see (the “app data” folder). The app does not ask Google for your e-mail address, name or photo. It keeps one small file in that folder with the date your trial started — no tax data and no personal details — so a reinstall continues the same trial instead of starting a new one. Google processes the sign-in under its own privacy policy.

Purchases (Android)

Subscriptions are sold and billed by Google Play; we never see your card or payment details. The app keeps Google Play's record of your purchase (the purchase reference, the plan and its renewal status) on the phone so Premium works offline. Google processes purchases under its own privacy policy.

Automatic local backup (Android)

On Android, the app writes an encrypted snapshot of your data to its own private storage every time it locks — the same encrypted format as a manual export. If your device's own Android backup setting is turned on, the operating system may sync that encrypted snapshot to your Google account in the background; this is Android's own OS-level backup feature, not a service InspiredTax operates. The snapshot is encrypted with a key made from your in-app PIN, so a longer PIN makes it much harder to break. You can turn Android backup off at any time in your device's Settings > System > Backup.

Deleting your data

You're always in control, and there is no account on our side to close — everything lives on your phone and in your own Google account:

• In the app: Profile → Delete Account removes the profile, its tax data, its backup snapshot and any export copies the app kept. Reset all data empties the profile but keeps your login. From the login screen you can also remove a profile.
• Uninstalling removes everything the app stored on the phone.
• The trial record in Google Drive stays after you delete or uninstall, so the trial cannot be started again. To remove it: Google Drive on the web → Settings → Manage apps → InspiredTax → Options → Delete hidden app data.
• An Android backup copy (if Android backup was on) stays in your Google account until Android replaces or removes it. Turn backup off in Settings > System > Backup, and delete device backups from your Google account's backup settings.
• Subscriptions are not cancelled by deleting your data — cancel in the Play Store → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
