How do I get the app?
InspiredTax is in a closed test on Google Play, for Android phones. Get InspiredTax explains how to ask for an invite on WhatsApp, or how to install it once you have been added.
Who is it for?
South Africans who work out their own tax: freelancers and contractors, salaried people with rental, investment or side income, and sole proprietors. If PAYE settles your salary, the free part lets you check it.
Does it file my return?
No. It works out your tax and your provisional payments, and gives you the ITR12 fields to copy into SARS eFiling. InspiredTax is not affiliated with or endorsed by SARS.
Where is my data stored?
Only on your phone. We run no server and never receive your tax figures.
How is my data protected?
It is encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key made from your PIN, and the app locks itself after 5 minutes. The app asks for one permission: internet access, used only for Google Play and the trial sign-in. There are no ads and no analytics.
Why does it ask me to sign in with Google?
Only to start the 7-day free trial. The app saves one small file with your trial start date in a hidden app folder in your own Google Drive, so reinstalling does not restart the trial. It does not ask for your e-mail address, name or photo, and no tax data goes there.
Does it work offline?
Calculations, saving and exports work with no connection. Starting the trial and buying or restoring a plan need one.
What does it cost?
Salary, PAYE, retirement income, retirement contributions and income protection are free. Premium unlocks everything else, with a 7-day free trial that needs no payment details and does not turn into a paid plan. Plans are monthly (R75), annual (R495, or R300 as a launch offer) or prepaid for 1 month (R95) or 3 months (R245, or R150 as a launch offer). Google Play bills them and shows the final price before you pay.
What if I forget my PIN?
Your PIN encrypts your data, so it cannot be reset and we cannot recover it. Keep an encrypted backup somewhere safe.
How do I move to a new phone?
Export an encrypted backup from your profile and import it on the new phone with the same PIN. Premium restores from Google Play.
Which tax years does it cover?
2024/25, 2025/26 and 2026/27, each on that year's published SARS tables, and earlier years back to 2015/16 for recalculation and comparison. New tables are added after each Budget.
Is there an iPhone version?
Not at the moment. InspiredTax runs on Android 7.0 and later.
How do I delete my data?
In the app, Profile → Delete Account removes the profile, its data and its backup snapshot. Uninstalling removes everything on the phone. The privacy policy explains the trial file in Google Drive and Android backups.
